Proviron (mesterolone) is an oral synthetic androgen derived from dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Proviron is formulated as tablets and exhibits predominantly androgenic activity with weak anabolic effects.

Clinical Indications

Proviron is indicated for the treatment of androgen deficiency in men, including symptoms such as reduced libido, diminished physical and mental performance, and certain forms of male infertility associated with hypogonadism.

Pharmacology

Unlike many oral androgens, Proviron is not 17-alpha-alkylated and is not aromatized to estrogen. At therapeutic doses, it is associated with limited suppression of gonadotropin secretion.

Safety Profile

Reported adverse effects of Proviron include frequent or prolonged erections. Rare cases of liver tumors have been associated with androgen use. Periodic prostate examination is recommended in patients receiving long-term therapy.

Contraindications

Proviron is contraindicated in patients with prostate carcinoma, male breast carcinoma, and existing or previous liver tumors. It is not indicated for use in women.
