Cytomel (Liothyronine) Overview
Cytomel (liothyronine sodium) is a synthetic form of triiodothyronine (T3), the most biologically active thyroid hormone. T3 regulates metabolism, energy production, heart rate, and body temperature. Cytomel acts faster and has a shorter half-life than levothyroxine (T4).
Medical Use of Cytomel
Cytomel is used as replacement therapy in hypothyroidism, particularly in patients who respond poorly to T4 therapy or have difficulty converting T4 into T3. It is also used alongside surgery and radioactive iodine in the management of thyroid cancer, and in the T3 suppression test used to diagnose thyroid disorders.
Cytomel vs. Synthroid (T4)
Synthroid (levothyroxine) supplies T4, which the body converts into active T3. Cytomel supplies T3 directly, providing a faster onset of action.
Non-Medical Use
Cytomel is used by some bodybuilders to increase metabolic rate during fat-loss phases. Thyroid hormones are not approved for weight loss.
Safety Information
Excess T3 can cause rapid heart rate, anxiety, and bone loss. Thyroid function should be monitored during therapy.
